Mr Peter Cooke MB ChB MD FRCS England FRCS Ireland FRCS(Urology) is a leading urological surgeon and cancer specialist at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust, offering laparoscopic and complex open surgery for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer to patients from Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and surrounding Shropshire and Staffordshire areas.

He graduated from Birmingham University in 1989 and trained in general and urological surgery all around the West Midlands. He has undertaken specialist training in laparoscopic surgery in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Paris and Hamburg. He was appointed to the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust in 2003 and has developed the urological laparoscopy service there.

Peter Cooke has led the introduction of da vinci robotic-assisted surgery at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust and will be the first surgeon in any speciality to offer this innovative procedure in the Midlands region from summer 2011.

He is the only surgeon offering laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, nephrectomy and kidney reconstruction in the Black Country, and receives referrals from colleagues on a weekly basis. He also provides specialist expertise in bladder cancer management for the Birmingham and Solihull Bladder Clinic.

The lead clinician for urological research in Wolverhampton, Mr Cooke is Principal Investigator for the numerous studies in prostate and bladder cancer and is a core member of the Greater Midlands Cancer Network Urology specialist multi-disciplinary team.

His academic interests are in bladder and prostate cancer, being cited in Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2001, and he was awarded the higher degree of Doctor of Medicine in 2001 for his research on novel treatments for bladder cancer, carried out at the Institute for Cancer Studies at Birmingham University.

He has numerous publications in respected international journals including the Lancet, and has presented at national and international meetings in Europe and USA. He is an expert reviewer for the Cancer Research UK information service, Cancerhelp UK. He is also the lead clinician for urological research in Wolverhampton, where he is Principal Investigator for the five year multi-centre Bladder Cancer Prognosis Program and Selenib studies.

He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, where he has helped redesign undergraduate training in urology across the region. He is a member of the West Midlands Higher Specialist Training Committee, and is committed to excellence in urological practise and training.

Staff

Midlands Urology works closely with specialists from the Birmingham and Solihull Bladder Clinic, Clinical Oncologists (specialists in chemotherapy and radiotherapy) and refers patients to other specialists locally and nationally, as appropriate.

Appointments for assessment and treatment are available in three prestigious private hospitals located in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Halesowen.

Our centres are the BMI Edgbaston Hospital, Birmingham, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, and the West Midlands Private Hospital, Halesowen.

These centres offer excellent, modern diagnostic facilities in a pleasant and relaxed environment, ensuring a prompt and reassuring service for the patient.

Surgery is offered on all sites in modern well-equipped operating theatres with highly trained professional staff.

By working in partnership with multiple centres, Midlands Urology is able to offer convenience and flexibility of appointments, combined with the enhanced resources and facilities of three independent private providers. This means that all patients have rapid access to specialist surgical procedures including specialist cancer surgery, laparoscopic and laser prostate surgery.

Specialist bladder and female incontinence assessment is offered in partnership with the Birmingham and Solihull Bladder Clinic based at BMI Priory Hospital in Birmingham.
